Risky Chance, my latest horse book, came out last week and I am excited to host a giveaway. It is the seventh book in the Horse Diaries series (Random House) illustrated by the fabulous Ruth Sanderson.
I've met Ruth several times and admire her dedication to her craft, and when Chance came out, I was excited to see her incredible interior art, which captured the setting, characters and, of course, the horses--I even bought one of her pictures! (See page 63)
Risky Chance is set in California during the Great Depression when Seabiscuit was king of the race track. Research for the book was terrific fun, especially looking at old photographs. During that era, racing was dangerous for jockeys and horses, and the story reflects this, but since it is a book for younger readers, I kept the violence PG.
So if you and your kids love a good horse story (or if you know a friend who loves one!), please leave a comment about your favorite horse book, which will enter you in The Great Back to School Book Giveaway. You just might be the winner of a copy of Risky Chance. I'll announce the winner October 4th (when I return from visiting family.) And don't forget to share this contest with others!

I would love to read that book! One of my favorite recent books is War Horse by Michael Morpugo.
Wow - a Horses Diaries book set on the race track. Can't wait to read this one, Alison!
Fantastyk Voyager - I loved War Horse, too. You know it will out as a movie soon, right?
I can't wait to read Risky Chance. I liked the story about Seabiscuit, so I will find this book interesting to read about. My favorite horse story would be one from my childhood which is the Black Stallion series. I love any story dealing with horses.
War Horse is on the top of my list to read! Glad you guys liked it.
Just remember Risky Chance is an early chapter book, so it's a fast read!
My favorite horse book is "Smoky" by Will James. I would love to win "Risky Chance" for my son, who is very excited about it.
I would love to read and review this book. I take care of our children's book Blog: Kids Click. I'm listening to War Horse on downloadable and it is so good. Can't wait for the movie to come out.

I'm starting a little library of books for our granddaughter. It'll be a while before we can read them together since we're waiting for her to be born any day now. But it is fun to start picking out books. So I'll say my favorite horse book at this time is the first one I purchased for our little library. It is a short children's book called Isabelle Lives a Dream by Peggy Sundberg. Isabelle is a 10 year old city girl who wins an essay contest and gets to go to a ranch in the Rocky Mountains where she learns to care for horses and ride. It appealed to me because I was a horse crazy 10 year old suburban girl once who longed to ride and care for a horse of my own. I'm looking forward to sharing horsey books and horsey toys and cowgirl clothes with our granddaughter.
I'm sure my youngest niece, Gaia, would love to read this book. I'll check it out on Amazon...but I'd love a signed copy!
On Thursday I am headed out to Colorado with MOM and BIG SIS to see family, so will choose the BIG WINNER when I return.
Thanks for entering!
Love your books, Alison! Whirlwind is a favorite!
I'm looking forward to reading some of your books. I can't believe I hadn't discovered you and your books until recently.
Some of my favorite horse books are "Chancey of the Maurey River" by Gigi Amateau and "Seabiscuit" by Lauren HIllenbrand.
My 6-year-old daughter loves horses and reading, so I'd like to enter this contest for her. So far her favorite horse book is The Black Stallion. Whether or not she wins, I look forward to sharing this book with her.
