I'm not really here

By Gayle Carline
Horse lover, author, and apologetic blogger

I'm so sorry. Mea culpa. Let the flogging begin.

I am normally on-track and on-schedule for my writing deadlines. Even "just a blog post" deserves my attention--I signed up to write a post, so I'm gonna write a post, dammit. I'm usually scheduled here the first Saturday of the month. Imagine my horror when I awoke to the email telling me to post on the last Saturday in June.

You see, I'm not here. I'm in San Francisco at the American Library Association convention. It's a crazy weekend here, with the decision from SCOTUS that gay marriage is legal in all states AND Gay Pride weekend at the same time. I'm staying in a hotel that's pretty close to the parade. You have no idea how torn I am. Should I go to the convention and learn how to use crowdfunding to raise money for my library, or should I go to the parade (and possibly watch history being made)?

Decisions, decisions.

One thing I am signed up to do is hang out in the Sisters-in-Crime booth at ALA and hand out copies of my mystery, MURDER ON THE HOOF. Hopefully, these copies will go to libraries that will hopefully include the book in their inventory. Hopefully.

I know it's not a mystery, but I'm also giving copies of Snoopy's book, FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH: ONE LUCKY MEMOIR. It's a book for all ages, so libraries might be more likely to stock it.

At any rate, I hope you are all doing something fun or relaxing or meaningful this weekend. Hanging out with your horses would be nice. If I wasn't here, that's where I'd be!

Stop by and leave me a comment if you'd like, to tell me how you spent your Saturday and Sunday.

So much to share

By Gayle Carline
Author and Horse-a-holic

First, I'm doing a Goodreads Giveaway for MURDER ON THE HOOF. Here is the link if you would like to enter (https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/show/99425-murder-on-the-hoof). It ends on the 28th, so don't dawdle.

I made a book video (did you know the term "book trailer" is copyrighted?) for MURDER ON THE HOOF. I like to make book videos. They challenge me. Like all of mine, this one is short, shaky and homegrown. Hope you like it.

Second, I want to introduce you to a book I read recently. I met Robin Hutton at the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento last June. She has written a book about a war horse, SGT. RECKLESS: AMERICA'S WAR HORSE. Reckless was a little red mare, barely 13 hands high, who was used during the Korean War to transport ammo over terrain too rough for vehicles to pass. There is so much about this mare that amazes me, from the fact that she would make these trips unaccompanied, to her official designation as a staff sergeant in the US Marine Corps.

Not only did Robin write a book about her (interviewing as many of her former handlers as were still living), she spearheaded a movement to have a monument erected at Quantico (USMC headquarters) in honor of Sgt. Reckless, and she is getting the funds together to have another monument installed at Camp Pendleton (near San Diego) where Sgt. Reckless spent her final days, and is buried.

As soon as I got a copy of the book, I opened it and never put it down until it was finished. What a fascinating amount of information, both about Reckless and the war! I had read somewhere that mares were actually preferred in battle to stallions, as they are quieter and not as given to fighting each other. Sgt. Reckless' story proves that a mare can be smart, too.

You can probably get your copy anywhere, but here's the link on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Sgt-Reckless-Americas-War-Horse/dp/1621572633). It's a great read.

Same stuff, different day

By Gayle Carline

Once again, you've caught me away from the computer, at the L.A. Equestrian Center. With any luck, I'll be showing Snoopy this morning at the Lights, Camera, Action Horse Show. I love the horse show environment, especially now that I just do it for fun. Will we win? Who knows. Will I have a good time? You bet!

While I'm out and about, I'm happy to announce the release of my newest book, MURDER ON THE HOOF. It's available on Kindle and in paperback. You can go here to buy it - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KGSALGY

Or, go here to enter a contest to win a free copy - http://gaylecarline.blogspot.com/2014/05/release-day-is-here.html

OR, go HERE to enter a contest to win a free copy and something much bigger (hint: like, a Kindle Paperwhite) - http://gaylecarline.blogspot.com/2014/05/but-wasnt-there-another-contest.html

In the meantime, it's Saturday. Go ride your ponies!
